The speaker quality is a step down from the standard Google Home, but that might be worth the tradeoff if you've got a lot of smart home devices, which are much easier to control on the Home Hub. However, you don't be beaming any video out from your Home as there's no camera. While Google Assistant smart displays options are still quite limited, there’s already a model for nearly every user. Though now, everything is compared to the Google Home Hub that undercut the pricing of everyone else.
Students, short on time and full of questions that need answering will love the Home Hub and its prominent focus on Google Calendar. It’s baked right into the main screen of the app and should always keep them on task. Asking Google Assistant for location information will bring up a map, contact info, reviews and descriptions of those places while asking about a movie will bring up information on its cast. To use Google Assistant, a user of any Nest / Google Home device must register and sync an account using the Google Home mobile app. In the app, a setting allows the user to teach Google Assistant their voice. The Home Hub is cheaper than most of the competition and gets much more than just the basics right. Google has inadvertently leaked a product video recapping its entire event no more than 10 minutes before the launch is set to occur. Google announced the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, the Google Home Hub, the Google Pixel Slate, and a handful of other products today, and now we’re getting to see them in the flesh for the very first time. Slow might be okay when all you’re doing is looking at photos or asking for a weather report, but when a device is promising to be a true smart home hub, speed matters a lot more. What is certainly the product’s most divisive feature, however, is the Home Hub’s lack of a camera. Unlike its predecessor, Google Now, Assistant is able to engage in two-way conversations with users. The other big thing that the Home Hub doesn’t have is a camera for video calling.
The Home Hub also uses the light sensor to automatically turn its display brightness down and show a digital clock when you turn the lights out in the room, so it’s not a distraction on your nightstand when you’re trying to sleep. Those companies and products are just the tip of the iceberg of what’s supported with more makes and models being added to the platform all the time. The Google Home's design and sound input/output received significant praise, while a lack of interoperability between other Google Assistant-enabled devices was criticized.
Images that we shot in the afternoon on our phones were uploaded immediately to the cloud via Google Photos, and would then appear on the Home Hub within an hour or two. Add to that basic calling functionality through Duo and some of the oldest members of your family can now keep in touch even when you’re far away. Ron Amadeo of Ars Technica praised Google Home's setup process and its ability to pick up voice commands even from a distance, calling the latter "absolutely incredible". Even if you are afraid of what might happen to it, you might not want to put it too far away - the 7-inch HD touchscreen is great up close and, unsurprisingly, much less dramatic when seen from afar. Despite what it may look like in press photos, at just 178.5 x 118 x 67.3mm , the Home Hub is surprisingly small. It’s so small, in fact, that the screen portion is about the size of a large phone or small tablet and the base is so petite that you could easily pick it up and place it in the palm of your hand.
At first, I had a bit of trouble figuring out how I was supposed to use the Nest Hub’s touchscreen. When you aren’t using the device, it cycles through your Google Photos as a screensaver. That’s a neat feature, but at first, I couldn’t remember whether I needed to swipe left, right, up, down, or just tap to get back to the home screen. According to Google Photos, I have 8,536 photos of my two daughters stretching back to the day my eldest was born. Thanks to the new Google Home Hub, I’ve been able to revisit hundreds of these photos over the past few days, each one tugging at my heartstrings and bringing up fond memories of them growing up as it flashed across the screen. Last but not least, the Home Hub makes a lot of sense for the smart home enthusiast who’s gone a bit overboard on devices.
It tells me what time I “went” to bed, what time I fell asleep, how long I was sleeping, how long during the night I snored or coughed, my respiratory rate, and if I adhered to my intended schedule. The Home Hub’s software is smart enough to present two vertically oriented photos side by side, instead of cropping them awkwardly. It also cleverly groups images of the same person together when it displays them. Even better, they don’t need to be concerned about mom and dad dropping by anytime they have company over, and the device powers down nicely at night so that they can get some shuteye at the end of a busy day. In fact, one of the biggest changes Google's made since launch is integrating YouTube Music into the device and allowing you to play music on-demand at no additional cost and without a subscription . The whole setup process takes just a few minutes and, thanks to the great new Google Home app UI, setting up additional devices has never been easier.
